Business research process outline

We all know that the volume of data on the internet, that we search using Google can sometimes be too much.

If you are working on a research project that requires you to collect information on a particular industry or a company, where will you start?

Where will you go to find the best and accurate information about the company or industry?

So,let’s uncover the best and most accurate source of information that is- the website of the company you’re researching.

Why company websites for business research process?

Because the company website will include press releases, annual reports, quarterly reports and analysts meets information.
You should be careful while using Google, Yahoo and other search engines. Do not overuse them for this research.

You’ll ask me when Google and other search engines give fast and easy information, why not use them?

My answer would be- While Google results can be fast and easy, it’s difficult to ascertain whether the information is credible or not.

Anyone today can write on Infosys, Tata Steel or Nestle on his/her blog or website.

But, that doesn’t mean the information is true and official. So, you’ll spend a lot of time and energy double-checking the information you’ll find using Google.

When you are researching a particular company, you would like to go to Google first and check what different links you get about that website.

One obvious way to get more information about the company is from the company website.

You can type the company’s URL in address bar and go to the company’s website. For example,

Since you want to know more about Nestle India, you need to type www. nestle. in.

Check “Investor relationship” link at the bottom of the page.

Using Annual Reports

One of the most interesting things of annual reports is to check how the company is portraying itself.

Whether it’s marketing itself too much or giving true information to the public.

What will you check in a company’s annual reports?

You should check

  • Director’s Report
  • Management Discussion and Analysis
  • Auditor’s Report
  • Balance Sheet
  • Profit and Loss account
  • Cash Flow Statement
  • Notes to Financial Statement

If you need more information about the company, you can check the company’s website for analysts meet and press releases.

This is the first step in any online business research process.

I am an MBA student and while studying financial performance of any company, I have tried what you have mentioned but somewhere I cannot connect the report and end up calculating ratios and taking inference out of it.
I want my report to be a quality report by connecting macroeconomic actors and company performance both

can you give me any example or a small illustrating doc or a link to improve my understanding.
