Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.
You’re unemployed and depressed. You think you are the only one who is out of work despite having skills, knowledge and experience.
Though you are aware of top job hunting methods, you haven’t yet applied all of them and found hope.
You want to stay upbeat and have watched some inspirational videos that give you instant boost.
Still, you find yourself on the sidelines—watching others enjoying life.
You’re not alone.
I’ve gone through this. When I was out of work, my first reaction was of ‘denial’. I never thought I’d be out of work. This made me upset initially—and depressed soon.
This depression started taking its toll on my health—mental and physical.
I became short tempered, lost hunger and couldn’t sleep at night.
It seemed to be the end of the world.
But, everything was not bad.
In this period, I read a lot of motivational books and spent time with my friends and family. These things helped me to see the world with fresh mind and enjoy life.
I started doing these activities and enjoyed every moment of it.
Here’re some of the activities I followed that changed my perspective and helped me maintain the sanity.
1. Greet the Sunrise
I started waking up early. No matter what time I went to bed. Watching the sunrise was the first activity that I started my day with. Watching and appreciating the energy of the Sun made me more energetic.
2. Go For a Walk
I started going for a walk in nearby garden. Greeting the sunrise and walking for 30-45 minutes made me fresh. Soon, I started losing some weight too. Walking helps you strengthen your heart, it’s good for your brain and bones. Walking helps you alleviate symptoms of depression. It improves your fitness.
3. Count Your Blessings
Gratitude makes us happier. I started thinking and thanking for the things and the friends and family I had. I slowly developed this habit of changing mind channels. How do you do that? Next time, whenever a negative thought comes to your mind, become aware of the thought, take a deep breath and while releasing the breath, think of your key achievements in your life—howsoever small they are. This will help you change the negative channel and shift to positive channel.
4. Listen to Beautiful Music
Music is the language of soul.
Feeling depressed? Play your favorite song and dance. Yes, dance as if nobody’s watching. Your mood will be great in plain 5-10 minutes, guaranteed!!!
Benefits of listening to music are many—it stimulates brain cells, reduces stress, promotes sound sleep and increases optimism.
5. Drink More Water Than Usual
When you’re depressed, your body becomes dry and irritable. Drink at least 10 glasses or 3-5 liters of water everyday. There are plenty of benefits of drinking water—weight loss, healthy skin, healthy heart, remove toxins, restoring energy and feeling fresh, maintain body temperature and help in sickness.
6. Eat Simpler and mindfully
Food affects our health, mood and thinking. Eat unprocessed or less processed food. Some simple rules are—chew well, eat only 80% of your hunger, start small, stop multitasking at meal times, focus on the flavor, texture and taste of the food in your mouth, prepare your own meals and share with your friends.
7. Exercise More
Daily exercise of 45 minutes is important. It gives you confidence and energy to think positive. If you don’t exercise, start small, start with 30 minutes and slowly increase repetitions and time of your exercise. Experience the change.
8. Laugh With Your Family and Friends
Laughing is the best medicine for depression. Join a laughter club or laugh with your friends and family.Laughter has many benefits—lower blood pressure, increase oxygenation of the blood, it gives a workout to diaphragm, facial and back muscles, reduces stress hormones and increase in alertness, creativity and memory.
9. Watch Cartoons
There is no age bar for watching cartoons. You might be 3 years old or 50 years old, it doesn’t matter. As long as you enjoy what you are doing, it gives you immense pleasure. You can watch The Simpsons or Tom and Jerry or any series that you love.
10. Take Naps
If you can’t sleep well at night or have less sleep since you want to greet the sunrise, you can take naps in the daytime. 30 minutes nap gives you fresh feeling and take heaviness off your eyes.
Enjoy any or all of these activities and I am sure you will be happier, healthier and energetic.
